Not everyone wants a cozy family Christmas on the couch- some families like to head out for an adventure away from home during their winter break. If you’re looking to hit the road this holiday season to explore somewhere further afield, you’re in luck. The world is full of great vacation spots that are perfect for the Christmas season, where you can celebrate in style while avoiding the winter blues.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most vibrant, exciting cities, with plenty of fascinating museums and exciting activities for the whole family to enjoy. Explore the many ice skating rinks around the city for festive fun, and make sure to catch the Dutch National Ballet’s icy performance of The Nutcracker.

Cape Town, South Africa

If you’re hoping to catch a few rays of sun and skip out the white Christmas altogether, head down to the southern hemisphere for a summertime festive season. Cape Town is a great choice for families- it’s in driving distance from traditional African safaris featuring all of the country’s famous wildlife, and has a variety of beautiful beaches and spectacular views. Don’t miss the city’s Christmas craft markets, where you’ll be sure to pick up some unique treats for family back home.

London, England

No one does festive cheer like the British, so London truly comes alive at this time of year. Start by exploring the excitement at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland and then head over for some chilly ice skating at the notorious Tower of London. You’ll easily warm up every evening at one of London’s many beautiful and historic hotels, and there are plenty of opportunities for Boxing Day sales shopping on Oxford Street.

Key West, Florida

For a warming winter trip within the United States, head all the way down south to Florida’s Key West for a subtropical experience unmatched by any other. Literary buffs can explore the homes of Earnest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams while the kids put their flippers on and splash around in the clear blue waters of the Keys. With fantastic food, a fascinating history and a vast range of family-friendly activities, you definitely won’t be missing the snow.

New York City

If you’re looking for an American city that feels a little more like a traditional Christmas vacation, look no further than NYC. The Big Apple knows how to do Christmas right, with spectacular window displays, huge Christmas trees and all of the chilly weather that you’d expect from the season. If you’re taking the kids along to the city that never sleeps then make sure you book tickets to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, where they can see the world famous Rockettes dolled up as nutcrackers.

Lapland, Finland

For the ultimate Christmas vacation, head to the real life winter wonderland of Lapland. This beautiful region has crystal clear views of the Northern Lights, so you can sit back and admire the incredible natural beauty after a long day of cross-country skiing and reindeer-led sleigh rides. Look out for hotels that offer thermal igloos for the ultimate Christmas experience.
